High Bay Research Facility

The University of Wyoming's High Bay Research Facility (UW HBRF) is slated for construction beginning in March 2015. The facility, a shared UW resource among the School of Energy Resources, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Department of Geology and Geophysics, will be located on north 19th Street near the UW Centennial Complex. This laboratory facility will contain approximately 90,000 square feet of traditional and high-bay research laboratories, offices and meeting areas. The goal of this facility is to provide sufficient space, capacity and state-of-the-art equipment to grow various niche areas of research being conducted at the University of Wyoming. The facility has been designed to be easily reconfigurable, modular and expanded as different research areas grow or dissemble over time.

High bay space is referred to as a building designed to incorporate large, open vertical spaces. High bay space allows for the installation and development of large equipment and the ability to conduct research using large pieces of equipment and materials. In the case of the UW HBRF, the high bay space will—for example—allow members of the structural engineering research group to move large steel beams into their portion of the lab for testing. High bay spaces don’t have ceilings (basically open from the floor to the structural roof area) but in the case of the UW High Bay wing the vertical space from the floor up to the roof structure area will range from 24.5 feet to about 28 feet.

Industry Collaboration

The University of Wyoming has raised $15 million through corporate partnerships with $15 million appropriated from the Legislature. An additional $10.5 million was set aside during the 2014 Wyoming legislative session to match investments for additional technology and equipment needs.
