The Matching Grant Fund

The Matching Grant Fund (MGF) is an SER program designed to help UW researchers capture outside funding from external entities and promote energy-related research across campus.  Each year, SER seeks proposals from UW researchers that target topics of interest to stakeholders in the energy sector - sciences and engineering, environmental protection and remediation, policy formulation and law, energy economics, and education.  Applicants for matching funds must be competing for new, yet-to-be-acquired funds from an external organization.

The national landscape for research funding is highly competitive.  With the contribution of an SER MGF match, UW faculty have been awarded funding from the following organizations:

  • U.S. Department of Energy
  • American Chemical Society - Petroleum Research Fund
  • National Science Foundation
  • Idaho National Laboratory
  • U.S. Bureau of Land Management
  • Center for Revolutionary Solar Photo-Conversion
  • Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) STAR Program
  • Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

From 2007 to 2014, 43 of the 107 proposals that received matching commitments from SER were awarded external grants. Since 2007, $3,940,042 in MGF program funds have leveraged $17,189,849 in external funds.  For every dollar of matching funds committed by SER, between three to four dollars in external funding has been captured.

2013 MGF Awards

SER is pleased to announce recipients of the 2013 Matching Grant Fund awards.   A number of high quality proposals were submitted, and after a thorough competitive review, the following were selected for funding:

  • "Next Generation Hydrothermal Atomic Force Microscopy: 'Seeing' at the Molecular Scale Under Earth Subsurface Conditions" - Dr. Carrick Eggleston, Dept. of Geology & Geophysics
  • "A Novel Uncertainty Quantification Framework for Subsurface Flows Coupled with Geomechanics" - Dr. Felipe Pereira and Dr. Dario Grana, Dept. of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering and Dept. of Mathematics
  • "Demonstration of Produced Water Recirculation System for Enhanced Coal Bed Natural Gas" - Dr. Michael Urynowicz, Dept. of Civil & Architectural Engineering
  • "Catalyzed Coal Gasification with CO2 for Production of More CO and/or H2 - Dr. Maohong Fan, Dept. of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering
  • "Solar Energy Storage via Photoredox Chemistry at Single Crystal and Porous Semiconductor Electrodes" - Dr. Bruce Parkinson, Dept. of Chemistry

Seventeen proposals were submitted in reponse to the RFP, with a total request for matching funds of $3,060,209.
