Students should exhaust all Federal student loan eligibility before considering private loans. Private student loans are not subsidized and not guaranteed by the federal government. Private loans are based on the applicant’s credit worthiness determined by the lender and may cost more than federal loans. Amounts are limited to the cost of attendance minus any other aid that the applicant is receiving.
If a private loan is your last or only option, we recommend that you choose a lender with whom you are most comfortable. Students at the University of Wyoming have been accessing private education loans for several years. The lenders listed in the link below are those that have provided funding to our students in the past and continue to offer private education loans. This list is not a preferred lender list and we will work with any lender that you choose after comparing rates, terms and other criteria before you apply.
As of February, 14th, 2010, the implementation of Regulation Z requirements requires a bank/lender to provide several disclosures and a Self Certification for the borrower before a private loan will be disbursed. This will slow down the approval and disbursement of all private student loans. PLEASE FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE LENDER AND RESPOND IN A TIMELY WAY SO YOUR LOAN CAN BE PROCESSED AS QUICKLY AS REGULATIONS ALLOW. Private loans will take a minimum of 3 weeks from the start of your application to the disbursement. Your bank/lender will give you a Self Certification Form, but we have supplied one in case you need it. The student is responsible to complete this form and return it to the bank/lender.
