Call for Proposals

Rebel Health: Wellness without Barriers

April 5-8, 2017

We invite you to participate in the 21st Annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice. This year the Symposium will be held April 5-8, 2017. The theme of this year’s Symposium is Rebel Health: Wellness Without Barriers.

The mission of the symposium is to spotlight contemporary inequalities in order to promote transformative learning and engagement in the pursuit of justice. Each year, we bring together leading voices in social justice—from scholars, students, community members, activists, artists, and filmmakers—to support an inclusive dialogue addressing issues of social and environmental justice in interpersonal, community, and structural contexts.

This year, through the juxtaposition of “rebel health,” we invite people to think critically and creatively about the multiple and sometimes contradictory meanings of health and wellness. How do we come to understand health? Who fits into the parameters of health? Who has access to mental & physical health, healthcare, and equitable choices about wellness? Are certain bodies, minds, or communities culturally scripted as not healthy? Overall, we invite proposal submissions that explore the relationships between health, wellness, and social justice--that highlight inequities in access and explore broad and inclusive ways to think about wellness. In sessions we will immerse in ways in which health / wellness can be viewed through different lenses and reconstructed to shift paradigms of thought, attitudes and beliefs. Presenters will challenge social “norms” and critique the ways in which health is viewed in an increasingly reactive society.

Further we welcome proposals that push the boundaries of what is traditionally considered health and wellness. For example, the health of the planet and the health of people are inextricably linked. Thus proposals addressing spiritual, physical, mental, environmental health and the interfaces thereof are all appropriate.

Important notes about the Symposium:
~ You will be notified on the status of your proposal by February 27, 2016.
~ All submissions are evaluated by a blind, peer-review process.
~ We do not offer honorariums or stipends for travel.
~ Registration for the Symposium and lunch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are free.
~ Confirmation and any requests for changes in the schedule will need to be reported by Wednesday, March 4, 2015.
