(UW Nordic Clubs begin an optimistic season)

LARAMIE – With the UW Nordic Ski Clubs’ season is underway,
both men and women are feeling confident in the race to earn National
titles.
The women’s team, led by seniors Jennifer Kinner (three-time
National Champion) and Brooke Umphlett, return to defend their National
title once again. Guiding the men’s team in the hunt for the
National title after a best ever second place last season, is senior
Clayton Barrows.
Head Coaches Christi Boggs and Rachel Watson are upbeat about
the upcoming race season. Both are excited and eager to introduce
more people to the sport of skiing.
“We hope that every skier who comes out will have a positive
experience, will meet people that they can count on as friends and
feel that they’ve had a successful season,” express
Boggs and Watson. “We are hopeful that with every season at
least one athlete will come away from the year feeling that skiing
has made a positive difference in their life.”
The UW Nordic Clubs are open to anyone who would like to further
explore, or begin, their skiing skills. According to Boggs and Watson,
the athletes who come out are expected to treat everyone around
them with respect, to work hard, attend practice, get plenty of
rest, achieve to the best of their abilities and most of all, have
fun.
With this fun also comes the responsibility of fundraising to
send those athletes to Nationals each March to represent UW and
the Laramie community.
“We need to raise $8000-$10,000 dollars each year to make
this team what it is,” stated Boggs and Watson. “ We
need help from the University, the community, the athletes, alumni,
etc.
In addition to close ties with UW and the community, the UW Nordic
Clubs work closely with the Medicine Bow Nordic Association (MBNA)
to promote skiing in Laramie. The teams assist the MBNA in running
races, as well as providing additional racing opportunities to the
Nordic community in Laramie.
“We welcome anyone who wants to learn or become better at
skiing and wants to dedicate time and effort towards that goal,”
express Boggs and Watson.
If you’re worried that you’ve missed the deadline date
for joining the UW Nordic Ski Clubs, worry not, you have until November
1st to contact either coach.
