Prairie to Mountain Explorer™ (PTME) is a CD-ROM set of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data specifically designed for use in the classroom. GIS data have been assembled for ID, MT, ND, SD, and WY for such themes as: bedrock geology, roads, boundaries, cities, demographics, climate, land cover, land ownership, species occurrences or habitats, rivers, watersheds and elevation.

Students can explore these data layers close up (large scale) or from a regional perspective (small scale). Either way, students can find relationships among these data such as the specific climates most suitable for growing corn, or the elevations and vegetation types that certain species prefer.

Teachers interested in using Prairie to Mountain Explorer will need to have ArcView® GIS which can be purchased at an educational price from ESRI (contact George Dailey or Charlie Fitzpatrick for more information about purchasing ArcView®)
