Prior to beginning her career as a tenure-track assistant professor at Temple University, she worked as a public school teacher in University City, Missouri; Dallas, Texas; and Prince George’s County, Maryland, for a total of 15 years.
Major publications include her first book Culturally Specific Pedagogy in the Mathematics Classroom: Strategies for Teachers and Students. She has another book in press, co-edited with Professor Danny B. Martin (University of Illinois – Chicago) The Brilliance of Black Children in Mathematics: Beyond the Numbers and toward New Discourse, which will be published by Information Age later this fall. She has published 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and made over 60 paper presentations at international, national, and regional meetings. Service endeavors include serving as President of the Benjamin Banneker Association (2009-2011) and education liaison for community-based initiatives in Philadelphia (2002-2008) and Denver (2010-2012).
