Masters of Natural Science - Middle Level Science Concentration (MSC)

  • Mission: To deepen understanding of science concepts and environments that support teaching and learning science.

  • For Whom? Current teachers who would like to obtain a middle-level science endorsement and have at least 2 years of teaching experience.

  • Why? The content courses can be used as professional development towards meeting the federal definition of a "highly qualified" teacher.

Program Information

Master's Option:

The Master's in Natural Science - Middle Level Science program includes 30 hours of course work and completion of a Plan B (non-thesis) or capstone project.

Certificate Option:

Teachers who are interested in this program, but not in earning a master's degree may complete the UW certificate program.  This includes completing the 24 hours of core courses, which results in an institutional recommendation from UWYO to the professional teaching standards board. Coursework begins in June for four weeks in a three- year rotation of courses.  Students start in program during the summer semester only.
  • 24 hours of core courses* in life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, as well as content, pedagogy, assessment and research.
  • 6 additional graduate credits from appropriate science and research courses
    • Suggested courses:
      • NASC 5670- Plan B Research and writing
      • NASC 5810- Middle Level Science & Math Practicum (Required for teachers who are not currently teaching middle level science/math)
    • Completion of a Plan B (non-thesis) or Capstone project

  •  Earth Sciences Rotation (2022,2025)
    • ASTR 4000 - Astronomy for Teachers
    • NASC 5120 - Earth Science in a Global Context
    • NASC 5300 - Natural Science Assessment
    • NASC 5400- Spatial Data Instruction Technology
*A certificate program that leads to an endorsement from PTSB in middle level science without earning a master’s degree are offered; participants in this option complete 24 hours of core courses.  Contact SMTC for more information.

How to Apply: 

Application Steps: 

Applications due on April 1st. Deadline for MSC program extended to MAY 15th due COVID-19.

  • Go to Admissions

  • Enter your UW username and password or register as a new user.  Once you have access to the Admissions website, complete all required information for a graduate application.

  • For the Program of Study choose Natural Science MS – College of Education (Middle Level Science)

  • To complete the application follow the directions on the application page.

You will need:

  • A $50 application fee

  • A current resume

  • GRE scores or a GRE Alternative Portfolio (information sent by Admissions by email)

  • Three letters of recommendation (1 letter from your principal or supervisor) – follow instructions on application.

  • Transcripts from all colleges attended, must include a Bachelor’s Degree

  • A completed writing sample (questions sent by Admissions)

    • If completing the Alternative Portfolio an additional writing sample is not required

Applications are due April 1st by 11:59 p.m. (or 11:59 p.m. the following Monday if April 1st falls on a weekend).  Applicants are encouraged to file early; application reviews and admissions are ongoing.
