Message from the Director

Making a difference. Today.

When I talk with people about why they want to become social workers this is the sentiment I almost always hear.  Perhaps this entails working with a certain population such as children or the elderly or working with specific issues such as mental health or substance abuse. In some cases the desire is to work with individuals by providing therapeutic services or working with communities.  What is so special about social work is that the profession is so broad in focus that all of these opportunities and more are available to you.  Just think of it!  You might start off providing direct services to families and then one day become the director of a social service agency.  There are so many career paths available to you that you might have a hard time deciding where you want to start.  I know this is true because I started my social career working as a clinical supervisor at a drug treatment program and some years later became the director of a residential substance abuse program.  That my career path has taken me to higher education is an even more inspiring opportunity that becoming a social worker brought to me.

Of course, none of these opportunities will come until you receive a social work degree.  The good news is that the University of Wyoming Division of Social Work, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, offers both an undergraduate and graduate social work degree.  Yet, while there are many other social work programs to choose from, we offer small class sizes that allow you to develop close, supportive relationships with our faculty and social work practitioners already working in the field. The dynamic nature of our programs allows you to start making a difference in the lives of others as you learn.

Jane Addams, one of the founders of the social work profession once said "The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life."  That statement rings true today.  You can make a difference in the lives of others and the University of Wyoming Division of Social Work can help you get started.
