About Us

Social work courses were first offered through the Sociology Department in 1967.  In 1974, the Bachelor of Social Work Program was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and became an independent department. In 1984, the Division of Social Work moved from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Health Sciences. Our Master of Social Work Program was accredited by CSWE in 1997, admitting a "pioneer class" of 10 students.

Every year at the University of Wyoming, on average, 120 undergraduate students major in Social Work. Students in the BSW Program may take courses in Laramie or in Casper at the UW/CC Center. The Division of Social Work has 30 first and second year MSW students on average. MSW students can enroll to take classes on the Laramie Campus or throughout Wyoming through the University of Wyoming's Outreach School. BSW and MSW students have the option to attend class as part-time or full-time students. Please note that while some lectures may be conducted via video feeds at specific locations in the state, we do NOT have an online program. For more information on the Division of Social Work programs, please visit the BSW and MSW homepages.

The Division of Social Work employs 10 social work faculty and additional community professionals who teach on an adjunct basis.  Our student to faculty ratio, on average, is 15:1, which gives students a strong connection to faculty. The Division of Social Work maintains affiliations with human service organizations throughout the state, region, and nation. Faculty members are actively involved in several areas of social work research, including social work education, international social work, child welfare, medical social work practice, mental health stigma, gerontology, and grief resolution.
