My research privileges the voices and stories of students with disabilities, whether their disability is visible or not, as their experiences and perspectives are often not included in research and retention strategies that ultimately affect them.

Dr. Valerie Thompson-Ebanks

Even though post-secondary enrollment among students with disabilities has increased over the years, the graduation rate among this population remains lower than that of the general population. In an effort to better understand this issue andValerie Thompson-Ebanks improve retention among students with disabilities, Dr. Valerie Thompson-Ebanks has been conducting research that focuses on college students with disabilities who leave the institution of higher education before completing their education in the hope of understanding the reasons they associate with their premature withdrawal.  Thompson-Ebanks notes "while access to education is often noted as one means to level the playing field for students with disabilities, of equal importance is their success through to graduation."

Experiences of College Students with Psychiatric Disabilities

Dr. Thompson-Ebanks is piloting a study that examines the experiences of college students with psychiatric disabilities and barriers they reported impeded their completion of a Bachelor's degree. She believes this is an area that has not been explored adequately.
