Intimate Partner Violence

Noorie - She is 35, divorced and currently living in a transitional home supported by a local community shelter.  She no longer lives with her abusive husband and was recently granted a temporary green card/permanent residency.  She is happy to start her first job in a grocery store.  She feels she has only won half the battle and has a long way to go.  Noorie has not seen her two children in almost 4 years.  She says she still loves her husband and often wonders why he did those things to her.  She further stated "all I wanted was to be his wife and love him."

Dr. Neely Mahapatra

Intimate partner violence.  Just the sound of it hurts.  It tears apart families and hurts the vulnerable.  Making matters worse, victims are often blamed for the abuse.  Dr. Neely Mahapatra's research is vested in improving our understanding of Neely Mahapatraviolence against women in general, with a specific focus on domestic violence/interpersonal violence among minority women including immigrant South Asian women.  Notably, her research has evolved to where she is now exploring variables, methods, tools, and developing new theoretical concepts that will work best with this population.  Currently, Mahapatra is conducting multiple research projects that focus on immigrant women.

Mahapatra's future research agenda involves collaborating with direct practice organizations to develop culturally appropriate community-based interventions to prevent domestic violence and help South Asian women like Norrie victimized by intimate partner violence, eventually assessing the effectiveness of such interventions to better serve this population.
