Patti Flores Receives Hurst Award |

Oct. 20, 2004 -- In a tremendous outpouring of praise, 16 students from Europe, Asia, and Africa; 14 visiting international fellows and scholars; and three UW co-workers wrote heartfelt letters supporting Patti Flores for the University of Wyoming's James C. Hurst "Each Student-A Person" Award.
All agree that Flores, International Programs office associate, is one of the most compassionate people they have ever met.
In the spring of 1994, the Associated Parents of the University of Wyoming (APUW) established the "Each Student-A Person" Award to recognize members of UW's faculty or staff who have created a warm and caring environment for UW students. In 2000, the award was renamed for James C. Hurst, UW's vice president for student affairs from 1981-2000, who is remembered for his warmth, his wisdom, and his dedication to student success. Recipients say this award is particularly meaningful because nominations come from the students, with the APUW Executive Board making the final selection.
Flores has met students at the bus station at 2 a.m., she has driven them to emergency medical appointments, she has dropped everything to help them get home to seriously ill children, she has watched over them in her own home in the first 24 hours after surgery, and she has outfitted their unfurnished apartments with her own possessions.
"I work in a great place, with great people, and am blessed to have contact with so many wonderful students and scholars from around the world and also from right here," Flores says. "I like what I do. This award is an extra bonus."
Shawn Bunning, International Programs project coordinator, says, "Patti regularly plays the role of counselor, confidante, financial adviser, academic adviser, insurance arbitrator, social worker, emergency loan provider, advocate, travel agent-in short, guardian angel, mother, and friend."
Lew Bagby, director of International Programs, says, "When it comes to dedication to each and every individual who crosses her threshold, Patricia exemplifies the qualities we would like all UW employees to possess. She treats every student with respect and dignity and serves them selflessly, without reservation, and with a profound belief in each person's integrity." Posted on Wednesday, October 20, 2004
