May 9, 2006 -- The outgoing president of the University of Wyoming's Association for Student Social Workers (ASSW) says First Lady Nancy Freudenthal's comments on empowering women reflect the important message in the national association's code of ethics.
Freudenthal recently spoke about Wyoming's wage equality program at a ceremony recognizing graduating seniors in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program.
"Her comments reemphasized the importance of Wyoming's newest social workers to help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty," says outgoing association president Angela Muecke of Sheridan.
Also at the ceremony, a donation on behalf of graduating senior Jeanette Skinner of Laramie was made to the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at Ivinson Memorial Hospital. Associate Professor James Smith was recognized for his advisory role to the ASSW.
New officers for 2006-07 were announced: President Amanda Demshar, Cheyenne; Vice President Ashley Royce, Laramie; Treasurer Kristina Wallace, Cheyenne; and Secretary Cathryn Ferguson, Worland.
"Throughout the year, ASSW has been actively involved in community projects, raising funds for the Laramie Downtown Clinic and Chrysalis House in Pine Bluffs," Muecke says. "They adopted two senior citizens during the Christmas holidays and delivered Valentine cards to the residents of the Laramie Care Center. Last week, a group of BSW juniors and seniors toured the Wyoming state prison in Rawlins."
