Chet Meeks Summer Research Award

Sociology Program

Chet Meeks Summer Research Award - Funding Opportunity Announcement

The Department of Sociology proposes that an annual award of $2000 be made to a full-time graduate student who has finished the first year of the Master’s program. If the expendable funds permit, more than one award may be granted. The primary purpose of the award is to facilitate the thesis research project for students who are early in their graduate career. The award will be made during the spring semester, based on the following criteria:

  • GPA for first-semester coursework
  • Mid-term performance in second-semester coursework
  • Quality of a 2-3 page proposal outlining the research project and specifying research plans for the summer
  • Evaluation of work performance as a GA, if applicable

All recipients of the Meeks Summer Research Scholarship Award will be expected to defend their thesis prospectus by the end of the fall semester following the summer in which they received the research award.

Application deadline: March 27th @ 5 PM

Award Procedure: Meeks proposals must be submitted electronically to the Graduate Director by the specified deadline above. The Graduate Director will distribute electronic copies of all materials to the faculty. At the April faculty meeting, the faculty as a whole will discuss the proposals and vote to determine the award recipient(s). Award recipients will be notified by the Graduate Director and will be recognized at the department’s annual Graduation and Honors Banquet in April.

Testimonials from previous Meeks Summer Research Award Recipients

"As a dual major in Sociology and Environment and Natural Resources, receiving the Chet Meeks Award was especially valuable. I spent the beginning of the summer preparing my prospectus and successfully presented the project to my committee by late summer. My thesis project involves creating a data set through a content analysis of over 20 magazines published by an environmental movement organization. The award allowed me to develop my coding scheme and begin the coding process over the summer."

     - Amanda Harper, 2014 recipient

"Throughout my college career, I have often had to work during the school year as well as the summer. Work often distracts from academic goals. With the Meeks award, I was able to spend my summer advancing myself academically for the first time, and completing my thesis will be much easier because of it."

     - Chris Stout, 2014 recipient

"Due to the generous support of the Chet Meeks Scholarship, I was able to devote time and energy to editing my master’s thesis chapters, which eventually became three published articles."

     - Ryan Gunderson, 2011 recipient
