Special Education Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Special Education, the candidates will:

  1. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in providing appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities in general education settings to promote positive learning outcomes.
  2. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in designing, implementing, and monitoring appropriate positive behavior intervention and supports plans for students with conduct or antisocial problems; and designing, implementing, and monitoring school-wide positive behavior supports systems.
  3. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in delivering effective instructional strategies and procedures to students with severe and low-incidence disabilities in general education, community, and work settings; and in promoting access to the general curriculum for these students.
  4. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills relating to special education law; specifically, eligibility for services, procedural safeguards of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), due process, and rules and limitations regarding disciplinary actions.
  5. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in identifying, implementing, and monitoring appropriate assistive technology and augmentative communicative devices and systems for students with disabilities; and identifying, implementing, and monitoring appropriate transition (school-to-work) programs for students with disabilities.
  6. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills relating to identifying and administering, instructional and behavioral performance assessments for students with disabilities; and delivering effective instructional strategies and procedures for students with mild to moderate disabilities in general education settings.
  7. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in effectively collaborating with families, other educators, related service providers, and personnel from community agencies in educationally appropriate and culturally responsive ways.
