Goal 1: Students in introductory-level Statistics courses will know fundamental statistical concepts and some of their basic applications in science and society.

Objective 1: Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of probability and statistics embedded in their courses.
Objective 2: Show proficiency in basic statistical skills embedded in their courses.

These objectives will be developed by

1. Successfully passing assessment questions/exercises included in exams in the introductory statistics courses.

In addition, Statistics majors and minors shall meet the following expectations:

Goal 2: Students shall know how to organize, manage, and present data.

Objective 3: Show ability to organize data for appropriate statistical analysis.
Objective 4: Show ability to effectively display the information in data sets graphically.

These objectives will be developed by

1. Successfully completing upper level methodological statistics courses as set forth in the statistics program requirements.
2. Carrying out in these courses exercises or small projects that incorporate data presentation.

Goal 3: Students shall be able to use and apply a wide variety of specific statistical methods.

Objective 5: Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing data using methods embedded in their courses.
Objective 6: Use appropriate statistical software for data analysis.

These objectives will be developed by

1. Successfully completing upper level methodological statistics courses, including Statistical Methods (STAT 3050) and Regression Analysis, as set forth in the statistics program requirements. (All upper division methods courses focus strongly on both data analysis and statistical software.)

In addition, Statistics majors shall meet the following expectations:

Goal 4: Students shall have competence in background mathematics and computer programming.
Objective 7: Demonstrate proficiency in calculus, linear algebra, and elementrary computer programming,

This objective will be developed by

1. Successfully completing three semesters of calculus, linear algebra, and an introductory programming course as designated in the Department Degree Requirements.

Goal 5: Students shall understand the mathematical basis and foundations of probability and statistics.

Objective 8: Demonstrate understanding of the properties of probability and probability distributions and their role as the foundation for statistical inference.
Objective 9: Demonstrate ability to use formal mathematical argument in the context of probability and statistics.

These objectives will be developed by

1. Successfully completing two semesters of calculus-based probability and mathematical statistics, as designated in the Department Degree Requirements.
2. Carrying out in these courses exercises that incorporate formal mathematical arguments.

Goal 6: Students shall be able to effectively communicate results of statistical analysis.

Objective 10: Demonstrate ability to write reports of the results of statistical analyses giving summaries and conclusions using nontechnical language.

This objective will be developed by

1. Carrying out in advanced methods courses small projects that require written summaries of results and conclusions.
2. Writing a senior thesis.
