English as Second Language

Practicum Guidelines - ESL Endorsement Program University of Wyoming

The purpose of the Practicum experience in English as a Second Language (ESL) practicum (Supervised Internship in English as a Second Language, EDCI 5580 Section 60, 2 or 3 credits) is to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate competence in the standards associated with the ESL certificate. In addition, we hope that the experience will develop an ethic of self-assessment that is critical to all professional educators.

*NOTE: Take the practicum course for three (3) credits if you began the program after January, 2008. At end, you must assure that you've taken 15 credits in total of ESL coursework. If you are uncertain of whether to take the course for two (2) or three (3) credits, contact the program coordinator. If you only need to take this for two credits, the program coordinator will send you the modified requirement.

The practicum can only begin once the student has completed the previous four courses that make up the ESL certificate (ENGL/LANG 4785, EDCI 4350/5350, EDCI 5430, and EDCI 5440) but not before student teaching. However, work conducted as part of a normal work assignment or student teaching can be used for the practicum experience, as long as it meets the number of contact hours associated with working with second language learners.

*NOTE: Placement site must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate personnel, including the UW Director Dr. Shim. This must be approved PRIOR to beginning the Practicum experience.

ESL Practicum Guide/Appendix C & D.  Please check the practicum guidelines right before you begin your practicum to ensure you have the most up-to-date guidelines.
