Lydia Dambekalns

Lydia Dambekalns is an associate professor in the Department of Secondary Education at the University of Wyoming, where she teaches courses in art pedagogy, curriculum, and international issues.  In 2001, Dr. Dambekalns was selected as the Wyoming Art Educator of the Year.  Her research interests include interdisciplinary connections between art and other areas.  Many of her art education students have worked with science and mathematics education students on interdisciplinary lessons and units.  Additionally, she has worked with NASA's Chandra Observatory summer educational programs.  Dr. Dambekalns has published in Pedagogija un skolotaju izglitiba, The Science Teacher, and Journal of Visual Literacy.  Dr. Dambekalns has spent many years abroad and is continually involved with international programs.  From 1981 to 1984, she worked in Benin and Kenya as a US Peace Corps member and became fluent in French and proficient in Swahili.  As a Hands-In-Outreach (HIO) national board member, Dr. Dambekalns worked in Nepal with Women's literacy for eight years.  She received a Fulbright Scholar Award in 2004 and spent a year working and lecturing in Latvia.  She will spend the next year working with the Center for International Arts and Music (CIAMO) in Benin, West Africa.
