Accreditation Ensures Quality Preparation for Teachers

The College of Education's undergraduate teacher education program is well established and accredited through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

In NCATE's performance-based system, accreditation is based on evidence that demonstrates that teacher candidates know the subject matter and can teach it effectively so that students learn. In the NCATE system, units must prove that candidates can connect theory to practice and be effective in an actual P-12 classroom.

A professional education unit that is accredited by NCATE is expected to be involved in ongoing planning and evaluation; engaged in continuous assessment and development; ensure that faculty and programs reflect new knowledge, practice, and technologies; and be involved in continuous development in response to the evolving world of education and educational reform.

In addition to accreditation at the college level by NCATE, our individual teacher education programs also seek national recognition through Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs) and approval from the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board. The following programs were given "National Recognition" status from the relevant SPA: elementary education, mathematics, science (biology, chemistry, earth science, physics), social studies (geography, history, political science), English, modern languages (French, Spanish, German), special education, and physical education. PTSB program review resulted in state approval for agriculture, art, and technical education programs.

All programs that lead to licensure or endorsement are approved by Wyoming's Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB). The Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) is an independent professional licensing board that governs teacher licensure in the state of Wyoming. PTSB is responsible for evaluating the credentials of both current and prospective educators to ensure that all students are served by competent and ethical educators in Wyoming schools.

In March 2016, the College of Education completed a successful accreditation review through NCATE. Beginning in Fall of 2016, the college will begin shifting its assessments to meet the new standards set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
