About Stop Violence

The Stop Violence program is in the Dean of Students office to help prevent sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking from occurring on campus and to provide victim advocate services for victims of these crimes. The Stop Violence Program works in collaboration with the University Counseling Center, Residential Life/Dining Services, Athletics, Title IX, and other UW offices to provide a broad range of involvement and education efforts.

Mission and Vision

Mission

The mission of the STOP Violence Program is to help prevent sexual assault, domestic/relationship violence, and stalking on the campus of the University of Wyoming (UW). The STOP Violence Program strives to teach students how to avoid sexual and relationship violence and stalking. If students should become victims of violence, we also offer services to help them recover, such as free, confidential counseling and referral to other university departments or off campus agencies. We also conduct educational programs on violence for students, faculty and staff.

Vision

The STOP Violence Program is committed to the belief that all people have the right to live free of violence and the fear of violence.  Because sexual assault, domestic/relationship violence, and stalking are not isolated incidents, we seek to address the common issues of power, control, and inequality in order to create a safe environment for UW students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Through interactive educational outreach programs and events, we seek to establish an environment that empowers survivors and challenges all forms of oppression.  Through education, survivor support, proactive change at the institutional level, and furthering campus safety, we commit ourselves to keeping the issues surrounding violence visible and continuing to encourage a safe campus community.

The STOP Violence Program is fully supported by the University of Wyoming Dean of Students Office in its commitment to promote campus safety, violence prevention education, and victim support.

Confidentiality

Your safety and privacy are the most important concerns for the Stop Violence Program. The confidentiality of conversations between an advocate and an individual seeking support are protected under Wyoming statute 1-12-116. Information discussed with an advocate cannot be shared with anyone outside of the office without your express, written permission. There are some important exceptions to this confidentiality:

  • If an advocate believes you are an imminent danger to yourself and/or others.

  • If an advocate learns that you or someone else being abused is a minor (under the age of 18) or a vulnerable adult.

Advocates with Stop Violence and SAFE Project are not Title IX mandatory reporters. If you have questions or want to talk about something without initiating the UW investigation process, please come by to speak with Stop Violence or SAFE Project.
