Reporting Options

Getting Help

UW students have a few different options for reporting violent incidents. We encourage anyone interested in reporting to contact the STOP Violence office to have a confidential conversation about different reporting options, so that you can make an informed decision.

1. You can report the incident to the police.

Which police agency you report to depends on where the incident happened. Usually, you will need to tell the police your name if you are making a report, but you can make an anonymous report of sexual assault or rape to the UWPD.

2. You can report the incident to the University.

There are several ways to report to the university; once you make a report to one department, that department will generally notify other university departments that may be involved in an investigation. Usually, reports to the university are made either to Judicial Affairs in the Dean of Students office, or to the Title IX Coordinator. If you live in the residence halls or university-owned apartments, you can also report to Residence Life.

3. You don't need to report right away.

There are people at UW that you can talk to who are required to respect your privacy. Talking to someone at Student Health, University Counseling Center, or the STOP Violence Program is not a report to the university. If you are unsure about talking to anyone at UW, you can always talk to someone at the Albany County SAFE Project -- they are a community organization with no connection to UW.

UW faculty and staff are also encouraged to contact STOP Violence either about incidents involving a student, or about personal concerns. Our confidentiality policy extends to anyone who contacts our office seeking support, not just students.
