Wyoming's Hathaway Scholarship

The Wyoming State Legislature established the Hathaway Scholarship Endowment to encourage enhanced college preparation of high school graduates and to improve college attendance rates in Wyoming. Hathaway Scholarships, consisting of both merit and need-based awards, provide Wyoming students attending the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college with additional resources to minimize their education costs.

Qualifying for a Hathaway Scholarship at the University of Wyoming

Three levels of Hathaway Scholarship are potentially available to UW students: Opportunity, Performance, and Honors. A fourth level called "Provisional Opportunity" is available to eligible students transferring from a Wyoming community college. Qualifying for a Hathaway Scholarship does not automatically qualify a student for admission to UW and vice versa. Please see for admission requirements.

High School Curriculum Requirements:

Students are required to complete certain high school coursework in order to qualify for Hathaway Scholarships. This "Hathaway Success Curriculum" includes specific requirements in the areas of English, math science, social studies and foreign languages. A full listing of courses required can be found at

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible permanent resident
  • Must be a resident of Wyoming
  • Must graduate from high school after 2005
  • Must apply for the award and enroll at UW (or other eligible institution) within two years of high school graduation
  • Home-schooled students, GED students, and part-time students may also be eligible

Please see for more eligibility information.

Calculating Hathaway Need Awards

Students qualifying for the merit portion of Hathaway Scholarships who have completed and supplied the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may qualify for additional need-based Hathaway scholarship benefits. Qualifying students will receive a percentage of this unmet need based on their eligible scholarship level. Provisional opportunity, opportunity and performance students earn 25 percent of the unmet need; honors students earn 100 percent of unmet need.
