About Us

Student Legal Services - ASUW

About Student Legal Services

This service is brought to you by the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW), with support from the Dean of Students office.

The ASUW Student Legal Services offers legal services to all fee paying UW students. The Program is funded through the allocation of a portion of the ASUW fee paid each semester by fee paying students. The consultation services provided by the Student Legal Services are free, therefore, to those students who have prepaid their fee packages. There is, however, a $20.00 document fee assessed for the preparation of a binding legal document such as a will or a contract. All legal services provided are performed by a fully licensed attorney and all consultation sessions are in person and confidential.

The information provided in this site is meant to be general in nature. Although every effort has been made to ensure its accuracy, the law is continually changing, and therefore, this site should not be used as a substitute for legal advice. It is highly recommended that anyone accessing this site consult with an attorney licensed in the State of Wyoming before taking any action based upon the information available in this site.

The Student Legal Services cannot represent students in court proceedings, but can and does assist in problem resolution through nonlitigative services. The Program also has some forms available for students and can provide information on the common legal difficulties encountered by students through the innumerable free brochures and publications available in the office. These materials include information on landlord/tenant law in Wyoming, debt collection issues, credit issues, et cetera. In general, the Program cannot assist a student in problem resolution if the student's issue is in conflict with another student or UW, but referrals to UW or outside resources may be provided.

The Student Legal Services cannot assist anyone who is not a fee paying student member of the UW community.

Eligibility

SLS is a service provided by ASUW and is fully funded by student fees.  Full-time UW students pay the SLS fee as part of their fee package and are eligible for our services.  If you are a part-time UW student and opted to pay the fee package you are also eligible for our services.  Part-time students who did not pay the fee package but want to use our services can pay the optional fee package to have access to SLS.  Please be advised that the last option may cost you more than assistance from a private attorney.

How Can We Help?

SLS assists in a number of ways.  First, SLS helps students by advising them about the law and their area of legal concern.  This advice often enables students to help themselves because they become familiar with the law, their rights, and options for moving forward.  Second, SLS connects students with resources in the legal community to help them with their areas of legal concern.  Third, SLS assists students with drafting binding legal documents such as wills and advanced care directives.  Please be aware that there is a $20 charge for the preparation of any legally binding document.

Areas of Assistance

SLS can advise on any area of law. The SLS attorney has a broad area of expertise and the ability to research new areas of law and apply them to your situation. As long as you return the intake form at least 24 hours prior to your appointment, SLS should be able to give you some directed guidance about your concern. Please keep in mind that the law is always evolving. Some areas are complex and SLS may require at least one follow-up visit or call to fully assist the student.

Mission Statement

Empowering University of Wyoming students to confidently navigate society and the legal system by providing quality legal advice and information through individual meetings and educational outreach.
