Credit ESL Courses for Int'l Students

The UW English Language Center offers credit courses for language and study skills support for degree-seeking students. Courses are 3 credit hours each and are open to self-registration for both undergraduate and graduate students. 

  • New students managing college classes for the first time are encouraged to take the Academic Listening- Reading courses ESL 1310 and ESL 1410 to build skills for listening to lectures and working with textbooks. 
  • ESL 1110 is a foundation course in advanced sentence-level grammar and can be taken concurrently with the 1210 composition course.
  • ESL 2110 is a speaking, pronunciation, and presentation course designed to improve any student's overall communication skills.  
  • The ESL Academic Writing and Composition series: ESL 1210, 3050, and 4010 fulfill Com 1 -Com 2 - Com 3 requirements for undergraduates.  ESL 4010 is an approved Technical Writing course that can be taken for Graduate credit as well.

Additional academic skills support for UW students is available through the UW Writing Center, the STEP Tutoring Program, Oral Skills Lab, and the First Year Seminars.
