J-Term (Winter Break) International Travel Course: EDSE 4070 - Understanding Uzbekistan: Historic and Modern Silk Road Connections

J-Term (Winter Session) International Travel Course: January 2 -  20, 2018
EDSE 4070
Understanding Uzbekistan: Historic and Modern Silk Road Connections

The site of this study abroad opportunity is the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan, home of the original Silk Road. Highlights include: A week in the capitol city at Tashkent University helping with EFL practicum experience, visits to observe local schooling, local cultural expert evening conversations, visit to a rural traditional family yurt and an extended stay in the fascinating historical city of Samarkind. Our three weeks spent in-country are divided between work with EFL learners, practicum time in the schools, art museum and architecture visits, and cultural history excursions. The flexible design of this course allows all participants to experience an introduction to the modern city of Tashkent, its former Soviet influences, and the history of the Silk Road as discovered in Samarkind.  Although all participants will be exposed to the same core experiences and cultural presentations, each person will be expected to focus on one particular area of interest or “strand” selected from 1) the education system and schooling of Uzbeks 2) the arts/culture of Uzbeks , 3)  the historical connections of Uzbekistan. This is a rare opportunity to travel to a part of the world that is not readily accessed by the average traveler.

Cost of the trip: $2,100 which includes in-country transportation, lodging, guides, gratuities, entry fees, and most meals. Not included: international airfare, passport/visas, travel insurance, beverages, personal spending allowance, and UW course tuition.
