RELI 4960 (3cr.)
Chinese Religious Centers: Hong Kong, Xian, Macau
Study one of the world’s most ancient civilization that is also one of the most important civilization today, China.  We will visit 3 very different cities: Hong Kong, Macau and Xi’an, where we will explore how traditional religions combine with more modern religions and how all of them meet today’s world.  Our base will be Hong Kong, a city where east and west have interacted for more than a century.  We will visit Macau, with its Portuguese heritage and its current status as a gambling mecca.  For a more historical perspective, we will visit Xi’an, capital of China for more than a millennium, where we will explore how Confucianism, Christianity Buddhism and Islam interacted with the indigenous religions already there.  We will also visit the site where the terracotta warriors buried with the first Emperor of China Qin Shi Huang (d. 210 -209 BCE) are being excavated.  In all these sites we will study how religions and other aspects of Chinese life have melded and shaped one another.
