Change and Sustainable Systems in India
Diversity does not begin to describe this incredible country, where
technological innovation lives comfortably alongside ancient rituals. This is a
17-day winter break course on sustainable systems and global environmental
change, with a focus on cultures of energy.
We will travel around southern India, starting in Chennai and ending in
Bangalore. See the ancient temples at
Mamallapuram, the former French colony of Puducherry--a.k.a. Pondicherry, home
of Pi (Life of), Auroville, Chidambaram (temple of Siva Nataraj, the dancing
Siva), Mysore, and the Western Ghats—one of India’s main biodiversity
hotspots. Oh, and did I mention…average
temp, 80° F….
workshops, site visits, lectures, conversations with locals, and readings will
bring into focus not only the challenges of a changing global environment, but
the exciting and varied solutions under development at all scales. Approximate
trip cost $3500. Some scholarship money is available through the International
1 credit preparatory course in Fall, 2013: Anth 4000-1, Preparation for India.
