India: Social Justice in Culture and Practice

Students in the course have an opportunity to visit organizations in Mumbai and Hyderabad, deepen their knowledge of social justice issues and learn about creative problem solving and effective on the ground action. They also study and attend lectures on works of literature and film that promote social justice (as such creative works both grow out of activism and have the capability to inspire further activism).  Topics covered include

         Domestic Violence

         Humane treatment of adults and children with HIV/AIDS

         Lesbian women’s activism and rights

         Daughter devaluation and female feticide

         Bollywood & Social Justice: an Oxymoron?
