Frequently Asked Questions

Certificate Program Course Type Comparison Continuing Education Credits FAQ Index

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

  • Does completion of this program mean I have a license to sell real estate?

The completion of this program does not mean you have a license to sell real estate. Each state may have different rules and regulations to obtain a real estate license. Therefore, we cannot make the decision as to whether our Real Estate Certificate Program OR courses will apply to licensing in all states.

If you are not from Wyoming, you should contact the office in your particular state which handles such licenses. Normally, you may find information on how to contact this particular office on the web by going to the homepage of the county or state and searching under government offices. Please feel free to show our information to them so they may see what is involved in completing our program. They may contact the originator of the program, Dr. Mark Sunderman, to ask him any questions about the specifics of the courses involved in the program (for contact information check out our Contact Page).

  • What is awarded at the completion of the Real Estate Certificate Program?

A certificate is issued by the University of Wyoming. In order to receive this certificate, you will be required to fill out a form available at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/registrar/forms/anticipatedgrad.pdf. On the College/Major line, you should enter Real Estate Certificate.

  • How do I receive a copy of my transcript?

    Go to the following link:
    Office of the Registrar
    Transcripts/Enrollment Verification
    http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/registrar/trans.asp

  • How long will it take to complete the Real Estate Certificate Program?

Please Notice! Online courses are offered on instructor availability and enrollment figures. We try to offer courses so the program can be completed in a year - to do this you will need to complete two courses per semester. If you wish, you can complete the program at a slower pace. Normally, classes are offered online in the following sequence:

    Summer
    • FIN 4610 - Real Estate and Urban Economics
    • FIN 3250 - Managerial Finance
    • BADM 3000 - Real Estate Law

    Fall
    • FIN 4810 - Real Estate Appraisal
    • BADM 3000 - Real Esatate Law
    • FIN 4520 - Financial Market and Institutions

    Spring
    • FIN 4800 - Real Estate Finance
    • BADM 3000 - Real Estate Law
    • FIN 4520 - Financial Market and Institutions

  • Is there a recommended order that these classes should be taken?

Even though not required, we suggest that you take FIN 3250 and FIN 4610 near the start of your program. The advanced classes in real estate will be easier if you have already taken FIN 4610. Having FIN 4610 in advance is also very helpful, before taking FIN 4520.

COURSE TYPE COMPARISON

  • What is the difference between an on-campus course and one of the courses offered in the Real Estate Certificate Program online?

The main difference with an online class is you are not required to come to campus. Often there are no set meeting times required even online. There is a great deal of flexibility with an online class. The rigor and content are similar to what you would obtain on campus - even interaction with other students is possible. One drawback is that it is easier for the student online to fall behind.

  • Are these classes like traditional correspondence classes?

Online courses are not correspondence study type courses. Our program is semester-based so you must complete each course within the semester you are enrolled. You will have weekly, and sometimes daily, requirements that can be met only by keeping up with the pace the instructor sets. The pace is very realistic. In the traditional correspondence class, material is covered at the student’s own pace. Even though there might be others taking the class at the same time, the student is often unaware of classmates. Also, contact with the instructor may be limited. There is no community of learners; you are often on your own.

Unlike other programs that are partially delivered via mail, telephone or videotape, or require some on campus attendance, 100% of our curriculum can be completed via the Internet. Because we utilize an asynchronous format that works like e-mail, you are free to participate at the times and places that work best for you.

  • What is a "stand-alone" course of study?

The Real Estate Certificate Program could be viewed as a stand-alone course of study. By being stand-alone, the Certificate Program can be completed without being part of a degree program at either the University of Wyoming or another institution. It is also possible to take individual classes if you are not part of the Certificate Program.

  • Are online courses an easy way to earn credits?

Online learning is not easy. Your professors will demand at least the same quality of work as they would receive from you in a face-to-face classroom. A similar number of hours will need to be committed throughout the course of a semester for an online course as a face-to-face course. (Note: Some say more hours are required.) Remember that your courses will include deadlines and will provide detailed instructions on any required assignments, but there will not be anyone telling you to "turn in your assignment." Online learning is convenient - you do not have to commute to campus, and you can attend class when you want - either early in the morning, late at night, or anytime in-between. As long as you have an internet connection, where you take the class from is also unlimited. The main advantage that online instruction has is FLEXIBILITY.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

  • How do I sign up to take just one course in Real Estate? I only need the continuing education credits. How does this work?

You must apply to the University of Wyoming as a non-degree undergraduate. Once admitted, you may register for courses through the WyoWeb system (http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/registrar/). At the end of the semester, you can access your grade online through WyoWeb. Information regarding transcripts is found at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/registrar/trans.asp. For more information on transcripts and your UW student record, contact the Office of the Registrar (http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/registrar/).

  • I am working on a degree at another University; can I still take these real estate classes? Can I transfer credit for these classes to my University?

Yes, this is possible, and many students have taken classes from the University of Wyoming even though they are attending another University. We would suggest that you talk to your advisor at your University to make sure they will accept transfer credit. Please contact us (contact information is on our Contact Page) if you or your advisor have further questions.

  • Can I transfer classes from another University into the certificate program?

No. According to the University of Wyoming Office of the Registrar, a certificate is "a body of knowledge from a particular institution." Therefore, a UW certificate cannot accept "bodies of knowledge" from other institutions. All real estate certificate courses must be taken through the University of Wyoming.

  • Can I substitute classes from the University of Wyoming for the six required courses?

It is possible, but you must have prior approval.

  • I want to get my real estate license. How do I begin?

This will depend on which state you are in. We would suggest that you contact the Real Estate Commission in your state for further information.

  • Explain what it means when you say Wyoming has a reciprocol agreement with another state.

When Wyoming has a reciprocal agreement with another state it means that all you have to do is:
    1. complete the paperwork to apply for licensing in the target state
    2. submit certification from your resident state that your license is in good standing.

No testing or additional requirements are necessary. This applies to both pre-licensing and appraisal.

The Wyoming Real Estate Commission (http://realestate.state.wy.us/) lists the states holding reciprocal agreements with Wyoming.
