Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts

The recently renovated and expanded Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), which houses the Departments of Theatre and Dance and Music, as well as UW Events and Cultural Outreach, boasts some of the best-equipped and finest small performing arts venues and support facilities in the Rocky Mountain region, including:

BCPA Theatre and Dance Performing Venues

BCPA Theatre and Dance Performing Venues include the Main Stage, the Thrust Theatre, and the Studio Theatre.

Main Stage

The Main Stage is a fully equipped, 375-seat, traditional proscenium theatre.  Larger productions, historical pieces, musicals, and operas are most commonly performed on Main Stage.

Theatre and Dance Primary Teaching Spaces

Theatre and Dance Primary Teaching Spaces include the Mains Dance Studio, Dance Studio 2, Acting Studio, Crane Studio (Acting-for-the-Camera Studio); and the Design/Tech Laboratory.

Mains Dance Studio

The Mains Dance Studio houses dance rehearsals and educational activities.  It is adjacent to Dance Studio 2, receiving natural light from that clerestory; the dance spaces are able to operate  simultaneously.

Dance Studio 2

The new Dance Studio 2 makes good use of ample natural light through a dramatic clerestory.  Dancers are visible from the BCPA Box Office land bridge, as well as from east and west windows along the BCPA Lobby and corridors.  The Studio is adjacent to the Pilates studio and changing rooms.

Acting Studio

The new state-of-the-art Acting Studio functions as our primary acting teaching laboratory.  The Acting Studio mimics the Main Stage in width and depth, allowing early production work, such as blocking and setting of dance or fight choreography, to be undertaken in the space.
