Before joining the Theatre and Dance Department at the University of Wyoming in 2008, John was a freelance actor/director/teacher. He served as Company Manager for Idaho Theatre for Youth and Director of Education for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. He spent two years as a member of the acting company for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival appearing in CYANO DE BERGERAC, THE WINTER’S TALE, THE TEMPEST, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, ON THE RAZZLE and touring an adapted version of HAMLET for the OSF School Visit Program. Other favorite acting credits include I AM MY OWN WIFE, DOUBT (Fr. Flynn), PROOF (Hal), MACBETH (title role), TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA (Proteus), PICASSO AT LAPIN AGILE (Einstein) and THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED).
Directing credits include the musicals FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (College of Idaho), MOSS GOWN, JACK FROST (both for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival), TWELFTH NIGHT (Idaho Repertory Theatre), THREE DAYS OF RAIN and THE UNDERPANTS (Snowy Range Summer Theatre) THE CRUCIBLE, and FUDDY MEERS (University of Wyoming). He was co-director on SIX SONGS FROM ELLIS an original dance/theatre piece for the University of Wyoming, for which he shared a Distinguished Achievement in Directing Award from the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival National Selection team with co-director and choreographer Professor Marsha Knight. The production was selected as First Alternate for 2010 National American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C.
John has received the 2003 Mayor’s Award for Artistic Excellence (Boise, ID), an Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of Idaho’s Academic Assistance program in 2005, and an Extraordinary Merit for Teaching Award from UW’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2010.
