Play Explores Independence
Oct. 25, 2002 -- The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present the play "Independence" Nov. 6 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center studio theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee performance Nov. 10. Tickets cost $13 for adults, $11 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Call (307) 766-6666 or 766-3327 for tickets.
"Independence" explores how the weight of family relationships bears on the development of three sisters, says Harry Woods, Department of Theatre and Dance publicist. The Briggs daughters discover that before they can completely become sisters, they must understand what it means to each to be their mother's daughters. "Independence" is exactly what's at stake.
Playwright Lee Blessing says, "Women are asked to carry a disproportionate sense of responsibility for the integrity of families even those into which they are simply born. For many women ... just ‘taking off' is not a satisfactory answer. Again and again, they find themselves drawn back to meet a crisis, to support a weak sibling, to tacitly ratify that the family itself no matter how dangerous it might be for them is valuable at all costs."
