WESTERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE BUILDING
The Western Research Institute Building houses facilities for research in minerals resources vital to Wyoming's economic development. The building, constructed in 1945 on a site donated by the University of Wyoming, originally housed the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, Petroleum and Oil Shale Experiment Station. The structure and site were returned to the university in the 1970s.
Cheyenne architect Frederic H. Porter's design is symmetrical in the Beaux Arts tradition. The marble stone and ornamentation on the building facade is an experimental modernization of that style. The building blends well with other structures on the west of the University of Wyoming campus and is a fine addition to UW's architectural heritage.
