University of Wyoming President George Duke Humphrey (1945-1964) was known as a "brick and mortar" man because of his aggressive building program. Humphrey saw the need for the university to make a strong and visible commitment to the sciences. The George Duke Humphrey Science Center was completed in 1970. The complex provides a science library, classroom and laboratory space for the physical and biological sciences.
The association of architects that designed these buildings translated Humphrey's idealism into a reality that is both functional and beautiful. The similar, facing buildings are divided by a courtyard. These buildings are contemporary western American rendition of international modernism. The blend of native stone with glass and precast concreted expresses both strength and gracefulness. All three buildings of the complex -- the Classroom Building, the Biological and Physical Sciences buildings -- are indicative of President Humphrey's and Wyoming's' commitment to the sciences.
