ROSS HALL
Ross Hall was named for Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first female governor of Wyoming and the first female governor in the United States (1925-26). It was designed by the firm of Porter and Porter of Cheyenne and completed in 1959.
The building initially served as a women's dormitory. It also housed the Division of Music in its basement. Today, academic departments and the faculty-staff dining room occupy the facility.
In a traditional formation of communal space, Ross Hall has a central courtyard partially enclosed by the east and west wings of the building. A sense of linearity, present in all campus buildings constructed ruing this period, is broken by the presence of these wings. Attention to detail is present in the use of precast concrete spandrels colored to match the natural Wyoming sandstone. The building's unique architectural feature is the sue of precast lattice blocks of concrete for both ornamentation and the practical enclosing of the exterior stairs.
