Testing Accommodations Information

Testing accommodations are an interactive process between eligible students, DSS and faculty.  Please notify DSS as soon as possible if you have concerns related to testing accommodations.

Overview of Process:

  • Must request accommodations for each course, each semester.

  • Provide syllabi to coordinators.

  • For exams that will be taken at DSS, students must request exams at least a week in advance.  In cases where exam dates are not announced in this time frame, students should notify their coordinator as soon as possible.

    • For Fall 2020, DSS is limiting the amount of in-person exams that will be proctored at DSS. For more information, students should contact their DSS coordinator.

  • Notify DSS of any exam date changes, special needs (including use of computer for online exams, etc.).

  • Coordinators will notify faculty of approved accommodations via email.

  • For exams that will be taken at DSS, DSS will request exams from instructors at least two (2) days before scheduled exam.

  • Proctors exams per information provided with the exam.

  • Scan & email completed exams to faculty upon student completion.

  • Provide exam instructions either as response to the accommodation email, or with individual exams.

  • Provides DSS with copy of exam (email to or drop-off exam to Knight Hall 109).

    • For Fall 2020, DSS is asking that all exams be provided to DSS via email in order to reduce the likelihood of virus transmission.

  • For online exams, instructors are responsible for extending exam times for students.

    • For exams in WyoCourses, Quiz Extensions allows you to extend the time on all the quizzes for one student or multiple students, in a given course, all at once.  This tool was developed and shared by the University of Central Florida (UCF). For more information please go to the UCF Quiz Extensions webpage. Faculty can also change one exam at a time by following the Canvas's Guide to Giving Student's Extra Time.

    • Please note: Quiz extensions cannot be made in Google Chrome. To extend quiz times, please use a different web browser such as Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, etc.

    • For local help with WyoCourses quizzes: Contact the ECTL anytime by email, or phone, (307) 766-3726, or visit the ECTL Support page

  • Answers exam related questions from student.

  • Notifies DSS of any concerns related to exam proctoring.

  • Exams Requiring Special Software Programs:

    • DSS has several dedicated testing computers.  If an exam requires a certain software program (e.g. MatLab, RStudio, etc...) please note that information when communicating with the Testing Coordinator.  DSS will do it's best to secure student access to the program.  If we are unable to do so, we will notify you as soon as possible to explore other options.

General exam information

DSS will make every effort to send instructor reminders at least two days in advance; occasionally, reminders may be late in situations beyond our control.  We recommend setting up a reminder system when accommodation letters are received.

If exams are not received by DSS in time for the student’s scheduled start time (which is typically conveyed in their accommodation letter and reminder email), faculty may be responsible for administering the exam with the appropriate accommodations or allowing for a makeup exam (subject to staffing and available resources) at DSS.  DSS will make reasonable effort to obtain exams prior to the approved student start time; this is especially important for exams beginning at 8:00 am or after 5:00 pm.

Exams must be scheduled one week in advance (adjustments to this timeframe are considered on a case-by-case basis).  This will allow students to schedule exams, DSS staff to approve the details, and then forward the request to you as a reminder.

All exams will now be scanned and emailed upon completion unless prior arrangements for pickup have been made with the DSS office. Hard copies can be returned via campus mail upon request.

Please continue to use for any emailed exams.

Late exam start

If a student arrives to DSS for an exam more than 20 minutes after the scheduled start time, DSS will contact faculty to confirm the student may still begin the exam.

Missed exams

If an exam is missed for disability-related reasons, DSS will convey this information to faculty as soon as possible.  For reasons other than disability (e.g. illness such as colds, flu, mono, etc., doctor’s appointments (not disability-related or conveyed by DSS prior), unable to attend due to road conditions, etc.), the regular course policy should be followed.

Makeup exam scheduling at DSS is subject to staffing and available resources and may require one week’s notice.  Faculty can administer makeup exams at any time, if convenient to do so and if allowable within the course requirements.
