First-Year Seminar

Which seminar is right for you? Take a look!

We have a wide variety of First-Year Seminars. Whether you are certain of your Major or are exploring your options, you will find topics that will spark your interest in the world around you, and help you feel part of a community of learners, scholars and friends.

Nuts and Bolts:

  • All true Freshmen will enroll in a First-Year Seminar. For more details or information, please see Student Frequently-Asked Questions
  • You will enroll in a  First-Year Seminar when you register for Fall classes. The FYS, in many cases, will be part of a block enrollment plan, designed to ensure that you register for some of your foundational classes. Your advisor will help explain your options to you. Any FYS classes not filled by the end of Orientation will become available for general enrollment. It may be possible for students to drop their assigned FYS course and select a different one. If this is something you might want to consider, please discuss it your academic advisor prior to making any changes.
  • FYS classes that are part of a Freshman Interest Group (FIG) are listed on the bottom half of this page. Please see below for more information on FIGs.
  • If you have questions about the First-Year Seminar, please contact your academic advisor or the FYS Coordinator, Meg Flanigan Skinner

First-Year Seminars and FIGs

Interested in being part of a Freshman Interest Group (FIG)? The FIGs program helps new students with similar interests and majors take three or four sections of linked or clustered courses for a semester, while living on a 'designated' floor in the UW residence halls with other FIG students enrolled in the same course sections. By selecting one of these First-year Seminars, you will be enrolled in 2-3 additional classes attached to the Freshman Interest Group. Joining a FIG is a great way to meet friends and fulfill high-demand general education classes! Please visit the FIGs webpage for more information: www.uwyo.edu/figs
