Accounting Degree – Bachelor of Science (BS)

Hunting down bad guys. Speaking truth to power. Building a sustainable business.

Bet these aren’t the first things that come to mind when you think about accounting.

As an accounting major at the University of Wyoming, you will be bucking stereotypes that characterize accountants as boring number crunchers. Yes, you will crush a few spreadsheets, but you will also learn that an accounting degree can take you almost anywhere.

What is Accounting?

At its most basic level, accounting is recognizing, recording and analyzing the financial effects of business activities. In today’s technologically driven and complex world, this involves a lot more than a calculator. To understand and communicate the flow of financial information in an organization, accountants must not only understand business and accounting principles, they also reckon with ethics, up-to-the-minute technologies and the global marketplace.

When you study accounting, you are learning the “language of business.” This makes accounting one of the most versatile business majors you can choose.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).  Acquire real-world tax experience assisting low-income people with their tax returns.

John P. Ellbogen $50K Entrepreneurship Competition. Work with a team of student entrepreneurs and pitch your startup idea for potential funding.

Internships. Make connections and acquire on-the-job skills by completing an internship. Students in the accounting program have interned at the Big Four accounting firms and at companies throughout Wyoming and Colorado.

Student Accounting Organizations. Qualify for Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting honorary society, and you can take part in regular networking and career information events. You can also get involved in UW’s student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, which takes part in regional competitions.

What Can You Do With an Accounting Bachelor’s Degree?

When you get an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Wyoming, you are getting transferrable knowledge and skills you can take with you to graduate school and into organizations as diverse as government, health care, energy, agriculture and more.

Your UW accounting degree program prepares you to apply for a variety of certifications such as the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or Certified Financial Manager (CFM).

What does your undergraduate accounting degree NOT do?
