Dance to Raise Money for Orphanage in Kenya

February 4, 2008 — The First United Methodist Church will hold "Black, White, and Red," a winter formal/semi-formal dance, Saturday, Feb. 9, from 8 p.m.-midnight to raise money for the Shalom Garden Orphanage in Kenya. The church is located at 1215 E. Gibbon St. in Laramie.

Tickets, being sold in the Wyoming Union, cost $3 for singles and $5 for couples.

The dance is a follow-up event to a project in UW Professor Tracey Patton's Cross Cultural Communication course for the Department of Communication and Journalism.

Students worked to raise money for the orphanage, which houses children who are shunned by their society due to the AIDS/HIV pandemic. With continuing donations, they have raised more than $8,000.

The success of the project was recognized by Sen. John Barrasso. In a letter to Patton, he wrote, "Not only will dozens of children have their basic needs met, the students in your class learned a life-changing lesson on the importance of sharing our blessings. The world is a better place because of your efforts."
