Pilar Flores
Pilar Flores has been selected as Student Educational Opportunity (SEO) director at the University of Wyoming. Her appointment is subject to approval by the UW Board of Trustees.
Vice President for Student Affairs Sara Axelson appointed her following a national
search conducted by a campus-wide screening committee.
SEO is comprised of numerous projects, many of them funded by federal grants, and
all working to provide services that promote access to higher education in Wyoming.
SEO works with individuals who are economically disadvantaged, first generation college
students, ethnic minorities or disabled, to help them access educational opportunities
and to achieve academic success.
Flores started her career as a grants coordinator at the University of New Mexico-Taos
and chaired the Department of Natural Sciences and Math. She also taught college courses
in biology, biological anthropology, natural sciences and computer technology.
She began seven years of increasing responsibility in the UW SEO, located in the
division of Student Affairs, in 2001. She has served SEO as the Math/Science Initiative
Project coordinator, Upward Bound and Math/Science Initiative Projects director, coordinator
of Academic Services in SEO, interim associate director of SEO for campus programs
and most recently as the SEO interim director.
Flores earned a B.S. degree in anthropology from Macalester College in St. Paul,
Minn., and an M.A. in biological anthropology from Colorado State University.
"Flores brings an in-depth understanding of federal grant-funded programs designed
to recruit, retain, and graduate underrepresented students at the secondary, baccalaureate
and post-graduate levels of education," Axelson says.
