UW Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Committee to Host Open Forum

February 28, 2008

The University of Wyoming Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety (BPS) Committee will host an open forum Wednesday, March 5, to gather input on three proposed bike corridors on campus.

The forum will be from 5-7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Gardens. To view the proposed corridors, go to the Web site at

The BPS Committee was formed last fall at the request of Sara Axelson, UW's vice president for student affairs, and Mark Collins, the university's associate vice president for administration, to develop new travel corridors to help decrease the likelihood of conflicts between bicyclists and pedestrians.

"The most important principle guiding the BPS Committee is improving the safety of our campus community," says UW Assistant Dean of Students Matt Caires, who serves as chair of the committee. "The other important principles guiding this process include promoting bicycle use on campus as a sustainable form of personal transportation and improving pedestrian awareness of bicyclists on campus."

Other committee members are David Kiren, president of the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW); Troy Lane, chief of the UW Police Department (UWPD); James Scott, director of UW's Physical Plant; John Nutter, assistant to the vice president for student affairs; and Mike Milam, deputy director of the Physical Plant.
