UW Debate Team Places First Overall at Boulder Event

February 19, 2008

The University of Wyoming debate team finished first in overall debate sweepstakes at the Western States Communication Association convention last weekend in Boulder, Colo.

"It is a success considering we had a relatively small crew of two parliamentary debate teams and one policy team," says Matt Stannard, director of forensics.

In parliamentary debate, freshmen students Jeremiah Etcheverry (Rock Springs) and Andrea Garfinkel (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished second overall, while sophomores Nick Larmer (Gillette) and Kathryn Starkey (Jackson) advanced to the tournament's semifinal round, finishing third overall. In policy debate, Travis Beach (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Isaac McBride (Boise, Idaho) scored five wins and one loss, to finish second in their division.

"These were senior-level performances from relatively young teams," Stannard says.
