Daniel W. Socall has been selected as director of the University of Wyoming Counseling Center in the Division of Student Affairs, subject to approval by the UW Board of Trustees. The appointment is effective later this spring.
David Cozzens, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of
students, says the appointment followed a national search conducted with
the assistance of a campus-wide screening committee.
In 2001, Socall was appointed to his current position as director of the
Counseling Center at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He
concurrently serves as director of the UNC Employee Assistance Program,
is the supervising coordinator of the Assault Survivors Advocacy
Program at UNC, and is coordinator of the UNC Bias Response Team.
At UW, Socall will lead a staff of licensed psychologists and
counselors, as well as doctoral students who are completing their
training in counseling and psychology.
Assistance is offered to any UW student with problems that interfere
with academic progress, daily living, adjustment to university life,
substances, or relationship issues.
The center offers individual, group, or couples counseling, crisis intervention services,
and brief problem-solving sessions.
"Socall brings an in-depth understanding of student counseling issues
from many perspectives gained on multiple campuses," Cozzens says. "In
addition, he has a proven record of administrative leadership, outreach
to the university community, and sensitivity to the challenges presented
by today's college students."
Socall's career as a mental health assistant began at the Holland
Community Hospital in Holland, Mich. He then moved on to be a
psychiatric technician at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, Mich., and
later as Employee Assistance Program Counselor with CONCERN, also in
Lansing. In August 1992, he was employed as a psychology intern at the
University Counseling Center at Colorado State University in Fort
Collins, progressing to senior staff psychologist and later to clinical
services director.
Socall earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Hope College
in Holland, Mich., and a master of arts degree in clinical psychology
from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He earned a doctoral degree
in counseling psychology (1995) from Michigan State University in
Lansing.
