UW Spring Enrollment Shows Increase

March 6, 2008 — Spring semester enrollment at the University of Wyoming is 11,670, an increase of 345 students from the previous spring, according to a report released today (Thursday) to the UW Board of Trustees.

Enrollment is expected to reach 13,000 by the end of the semester, when Outreach School enrollments are recorded, said Sara Axelson, UW's vice president for student affairs.

Among the highlights included in the report, based on enrollment on the 15th day of classes this spring:

-- Undergraduate enrollment increased by 201 (2.3 percent) to 8,882 students and graduate and professional enrollment increased by 144 (5.4 percent) to 2,788 students.

 -- Non-degree undergraduates increased to 261 for an increase of 12 percent, and non-degree graduate students increased to 687 for an increase of 32 percent.

Enrollment on the Laramie campus increased by 65 to 9,129 students and Outreach School enrollment increased by 280 students to 2,541.

-- Full-time students increased by 119 to 8,419 students while part-time students increased by 226 to 3,251 students.

-- The number of attempted credit hours generated increased by 1,519 to 134,233.

-- Freshmen have increased by 65 students to 1,618 students; the sophomore class increased by 100 students to 1,626 students; and the junior class decreased by 83 students to 1,807. The senior class increased by 54 students to 3,318 students.

Online non-credit classes have increased by 30 percent from a year ago during January. These non-credit courses provide another means to access UW learning opportunities. The increased enrollments signal increased interest in life-long learning.

Demographic data indicate the average high school grade point average increased from 3.0 to 3.28 for new freshmen enrolling this spring, and the average ACT score increased from 21.8 to 22.7.

The average transfer GPA for incoming new transfers for spring semester 2008 increased from 2.58 to 3.14.

Axelson added that freshmen applications for next fall have increased by 11 percent, with an 8 percent increase in Wyoming applicants. Campus visits in January increased by 23 percent, and were up by 72 percent in February.
