The University of Wyoming Art Museum is mounting a major exhibition of large-scale sculptures, titled "Sculpture: A Wyoming Invitational," for the Laramie community this spring.

The first sculpture is Deborah Butterfield's, "Billings," a life-scaled horse composed of found and welded metal. "Billings" is now on display in the Art Museum lobby.

Butterfield, considered one of the world's leading sculptors, has exhibited her work across the United States and Europe. Horses have been the single focus of her work for more than 30 years. Her works have been featured in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum.

"The series of sculptures will present 14 major works by artists of international, national and regional reputation," says Susan Moldenhauer, director and chief curator for the UW Art Museum. "Through partnerships with the university and a number of city committees and offices, outdoor sculpture is planned for locations on campus and in Laramie."

Other sculptures will be placed or created on location between May and July and will be on view from August 1, 2008-July 31, 2009.

Four works will be placed on Prexy's Pasture on the UW campus, including Charles Parson's 65-foot long steel, glass and plastic sculpture titled "Molto Allargondoro Horizon" and Carl Reed's "Braced Ring with Outlyer," an 8-foot steel ring suspended by two stone structures.

Additional works will be placed at the Laramie Community Recreation Center, the Albany County Public Library, the City Annex Building at 4th Street and Grand Avenue, Undine Park and the Laramie Greenbelt neat Commerce Street.

"The exhibition will offer extraordinary educational opportunities for students of all ages to learn about these artists, their creative process, and the behind-the-scenes view of just how these large-scale works are created and placed," says Moldenhauer.

The exhibition is sponsored by an anonymous donor with additional support from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, the Guthrie Family Foundation, FMC Corporation, First Interstate Bank, the UW President's Office, Wyoming Public Radio and the National Advisory Board of the UW Art Museum.

The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 22nd and Willett Drive. The museum's galleries are currently closed for renovation. However, education programs are continuing and the store is open. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum.
