Panel to Examine Sage Grouse Issues

Economic implications of listing sage grouse as an endangered species will be among topics discussed during a free panel discussion Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. in Room 142 of the University of Wyoming College of Law Building.

UW's Natural Resources and Environmental Law Club sponsors the panel that will examine sage grouse status, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the coming sage grouse ESA listing decision and potential impacts of such a listing on Wyoming's economy.

Panelists are Clait Braun, sage grouse biologist and editor of The Wilson Journal of Ornithology; Todd Tucci, attorney with Advocates for the West; Paul Ulrich with EnCana USA; and Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. UW Law Professor Deborah Donahue will moderate; two general continuing legal education credits (CLE) are available.

Other Law Week events, all free and open to the public in Room 142 of the College of Law unless noted otherwise, include:

Tuesday, Oct. 21, noon -- Federalist Society speaker Becket Hinckley will discuss the recent Supreme Court opinion, "D.C. v. Heller" (one general CLE).

Wednesday, Oct. 22, noon -- J. Reuben Clark Law Society speaker Steve Weichman, county attorney for Teton County, will discuss politics involved with being a public official (one general CLE); 4 p.m., Wyoming Society for International Law presents John Ackerman, a defense lawyer at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (one general CLE).

Thursday, Oct. 23 -- Wyoming Supreme Court hearings will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the East Yellowstone Ballroom (Room 220C) of the Wyoming Union. Oral arguments will be presented in two cases, "Spagner v. The State of Wyoming"; and "Joseph Krafczik Jr., Administrator of the Estate of Allan H. Krafczik v. Tanaya Moon Morris" (three general CLE).
