UW College of Education, Laramie County School District Sign Student Teacher Agreement

October 30, 2008 — An agreement between the University of Wyoming College of Education and Laramie County School District 1 will enable pre-service teachers in their senior year at UW to be placed in the district's elementary and secondary schools.

The agreement began last August and runs through July 31, 2012.

While there is a long history of student teacher placements in LCSD 1, the agreement allows the college to hire a half-time facilitator to serve as the onsite liaison and provide support for mentor teachers, district administration and student teachers, says Kay Persichitte, UW College of Education dean.

The facilitator also will provide a direct communication link to UW faculty and administrators.

"The agreement structures a process for district and college personnel to make collaborative decisions about pairing pre-service teachers with in-service mentor teachers while allowing flexibility for the district to determine the most appropriate school sites," Persichitte says. "All parties are excited by this renewed commitment to a collaborative partnership for the preparation of new teachers, which is strengthened through both formal teacher preparation and field experiences with highly qualified in-service teachers."

A committee is being formed to complete the facilitator hiring to begin liaison work this spring.
