It's sort of like Alaska's famed Iditarod dogsled race, but instead, a contest to collect as many canned food items as possible to benefit the Laramie community.
The WYditarod, an unconventional canned food drive, begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the University of Wyoming's Simpson Plaza.
Based on the annual Alaskan dogsled race, the event will feature shopping carts and teams of five people. Four will act as "dogs" tied to a shopping cart while the other person is the "musher." Five checkpoints, announced the day of the event, will be set up throughout the community.
Participants are encouraged to bring to the starting line canned food items. At each checkpoint teams have the opportunity to participate in a game to win more canned food items for their respective carts.
The goal is to have each team collect 100 cans of food at the finish line. Costumes also are encouraged, with prizes awarded in several categories.
"WYditarod is based on the Alaskan Iditarod with the addition of costumes and collection of canned food for the community," UW student Laura Evans says.
Registration forms are in the Campus Activities Center (CAC) located in the Wyoming Union lower floor.
