UW Geography Bowl Winners

December 4, 2008

Kyle Dobbins of Bowling Green, Ohio, a music education major, was this year's top individual scorer at the University of Wyoming's recent Student Geography Bowl.

Dobbins, along with Nathaniel HadleyDike of Broomfield, Colo., and Grant Gardner of Ottumwa, Iowa (both geography majors), was a member of the "Existential Batters" team that won the competition.

Second place went to the members of the "Cross Movement" team and its members Ross Bellinghiere of Jackson, a secondary education major, and geography majors Keoni Cooper of Hilo, Hawaii, and Scott Headrick of Blackhawk, Colo. Chris Murray of Casper, a watershed management major, along with geography majors Zach Irons of Tensleep and Monte Lutterman of Laramie, took third place with their team "Gorlocks."

Approximately 70 people attended the Geography Awareness Week event, while nine three-member teams participated in the bowl. Questions encompassed the entire field of geography -- maps, countries, climate, history, sports, cultural issues, language, biology and a few of the typical questions about state capitals and gross national products. This year's event incorporated more material for audience members and offered prizes donated by Rand McNally, the Wyoming Geographic Alliance (WGA), the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center and a local masseuse.

The Geography Bowl was supported by the Geography Club, the UW Department of Geography, Associated Students of UW and the WGA.
